The environmental conditions in Arendal is generally speaking
very good. Compared to the situation in cities around the world,
Arendal is privileged:
There is plenty of clean water.
Cheap and non-polluting electrical energy is easily
available.
Pollution is only a minor problem.
Roads and building are well maintained.
The municipality has areas for agriculture, forestry and spare
time outdoor activities.
New routines for waste collection and recycling will reduce waste

Even though the main conclusion is positive for Arendal, there
are still challenges:
- International agreements impose Arendal to undertake a better
purification of waste water. Large investments are needed.
- Cabins built along the coast have reduced the recreation
possibilities for the public.
- Old pollution has to be cleaned up in different
locations.
- Acid rain is still a problem and demands for actions.
- Conflicts between different user groups are obvious when new
roads are to be constructed.
- Increase in traffic density demands for action concerning
pedestrians and bikers, especially along school roads.
- Criminality is above the country average.
