THE RATE OF CRIMINALITY IS CLOSE TO THE COUNTRY EVERAGE.

In 1996 the number of registered criminal offences per 1000 inhabitants were 96,9 in the Police District of Arendal as opposed to 93,8 in the country as a whole. (The lowest rate was found in the Police District of Sunnmøre with 42,0 registered criminal offences per 1000 inhabitants.)
This meens that Arendal has a breefly higher criminality rate than the everage. But compared to other towns and cities, Arendal is among the better ones.

HIGH RATE OF CLEARING UP.

In 1998 two of three crimes were not cleared up, but even so the rate in the Police District of Arendal was higher than the everage (32 % compared to 28 %).
Including all criminality (crimes and misdemeanours) the rate of clearing up is even higher, 45 % in Arendal compared to 40 % in the country as a whole.

(The Police District of Arendal includes the county of Aust-Agder except the Setesdal valley.)

 BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Criminality = crimes + misdemeanours.
Criminal behaviour is defined as acts carried out against the Norwegian law and which carry a penality.
Crimes area more serious offences which may be punished by imprisonment for more than tree months.
Misdemeanours are less serious offences which can lead to imprisonment for up to three months.

Missing figures.
Criminal behavior not being registered by the police is not included in the statistics. These missing figures might be considerable, but compared to many other countries - and certainly cities - they are low. This is due to the capasity of the Norwegian police to investigate even the less serious crime.
