THE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN AGRICULTURE:

This table shows a decreasing number of farms the last decade. This may be caused by several conditions. During the last years there has been a decrease within the employment of agriculture. People used to be more dependent on agriculture, but as new trades develop, more and more people give up agriculture. As more people move to cities, the number of farms and farmers decreases. Low income is also a reason.

The table also shows that the average size of farms has been increasing. When the farmer gives up his activities on the farm, it’s normal for somebody else to take over, often the neighbours. In this way the size of the farms increases.

WHO OWNS THE LAND:

The table of ownership shows a marked change from 1994 to 1997. During this period of three years, the share of rented land has increased considerably.

WHAT IS CULTIVATED?

This table shows some selected agricultural products grown and produced by the farms in Arendal. The number of users shows how many farms getting support to produce their products.

If we compare these numbers with numbers from 1995, this means that the production of barley, gras seeds, apples, plommes and vegetables has increased. On contriary have the production of oats decreased. The same goes for strawberries a rutabagar.

The figures shows that the number of milking cows and dairy farms are nearly the same.
