* According to the 1996 population census, the Durban Metropolitan Area had 2.52 million residents and 609 thousand households. This amounts to 28% of the provincial population of almost 9 million people. Between 1985 and 1996 the city's population grew at an average annual rate of 2.15%. Assuming the same average rate of growth prevailed from 1996-1999, a crudely projected figure for the DMA population in 1999 is 2.69 million (an estimate which ignores the impact of HIV/AIDS).
