What can you do to Improve the State of the Marine Environment?

  • Do not litter. Place your rubbish in a bin or take it back home with you. Confront anyone you see littering. Plastic pollution kills marine animals.
  • Fish responsibly. Know and comply with the regulations that govern the use of our coastal and marine resources, and report people who contravene these regulations to the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service (KZNNCS). Regulations generally take the form of closed seasons, closed areas, minimum sizes and bag limits. Avoid buying fish that are on the recreational list and crayfish caught along our coast. Leaving discarded fishing tackle, bits of nylon line and bait packets on the rocks or sea shore is both unsightly and harmful to coastal animals.
  • Care for drainage systems. Everything thrown or poured into storm water drains, rivers and canals ends up in the sea. Before throwing rubbish into the canal or pouring old engine oil down the storm water drain, think about the impact of your action on an environment far from your doorstep.
  • Consider other users. All our coastal resources are shared with other people and inconsiderate behaviour will spoil their enjoyment. Do not drive on the beach or dunes, stick to paths and walkways on the dunes, do not make fires except in proper fire places and do not make too much noise.
  • Support local conservancies or other environmental groups e.g. Coastwatch. The effectiveness of attempts by local conservancies to promote environmental awareness by staging clean-up days and "adopt a spot" campaigns depends on public participation.
