The Mayoral Awards for Excellence were introduced in 1997 with the following aims:

  1. Create awareness of the priorities of the Metropolitan Area
  2. Foster Civic Pride
  3. Promote a culture of excellence
  4. Reward and recognise positive achievements

Crime Prevention is one of the four categories of awards, the others being

  1. Promotion of Tourism
  2. Wealth and Job Creation
  3. A Clean Environment

Crime Prevention:

Aim: To recognise outstanding achievement by individuals, organisations, groups and institutions acting within the Durban Metropolitan Area (DMA), in the area of Crime Prevention.

To win the main award, the individual or group or organisation must have made a special or outstanding contribution to the fostering, generation or promotion of safety and security in the DMA, where benefits of such contribution have had a tangible impact on the welfare of people or communities in the DMA.

The following will be considered:

  • Wide impact
  • Bravery
  • Long term consequences
  • Safety of women or children
  • Safety of tourists or investors
  • Community policing
