The Campbell Collection is an internationally renowned and unique collection of rare archival resources. The Killie Campbell Africana Library has the world's best book collection on South Africa together with a rich documentary oral and photographic archive on the history of this region over the past two centuries. The Mashu Museum of Ethnology contains this region's finest collections of African cultural artifacts. The William Campbell Picture Collection contains one of South Africa's two finest collections of work by black South African artists and the Furniture Collection is a prized museum of period South African Furniture.

Old Court House Museum is the oldest public building in the Central Business District of Durban opened for use as a courthouse in 1866 is now home to the museum. On display are costumes worn by the population of Durban, The Durban Room, an exploratory display which looks at the commercial development of Durban from 1824. The "Movers and Shakers" display which shows some of the main personalities of KwaZulu-Natal like K E Masinga; J L Dube; Harriet Colenso; Margaret Roach Campbell and the Zulu Kings. The collections pertain to the history of the Zulu Kings, artefacts and moving footage about the Baptist Nazaretha Church founded by Isaiah Shembe, original and unique Gandiana, collections relating to forced removals, the trade union movements. A unique collection of photographs about the history of Durban and photographic material on the beerhalls originally erected conceived in Durban and copied in other cities throughout South Africa and Southern Africa.

Pinetown Museum has multicultural display of Pinetown settlers from the Stone Age to the present day. Other attractions include cultural artifacts, a model of a Zulu warrior and a collection of historical photographs.

Durban Art Gallery is situated on the 2nd floor of the City Hall. It houses an important collection of local and international art dating from 1892. The collection is particularly strong in contemporary South African art with particular emphasis on Zulu art and craft. The gallery has an on-going collecting policy to reflect changes in South African society.

Durban Cultural and Document Centre documents the history of the Indian community including indentured Indians, Gandhi in South Africa, cultural artifacts, paintings, culinary art, traditional clothing and jewellery.

Bergtheil Museum is housed in a 19th Century farmhouse and contains an interesting collection of photographs, documents and artifacts relating to the 1848 German settlers and the development of surrounding communities.

Warrior's gate, Moth Museum of Militaria houses an excellent collection of battlefield relics, medals, badges and other militaria.

Addington Hospital Museum houses antique nursing and medical equipment, with archives dating back to 1900.

Kwa Muhle Museum, originally the location of the Native Administration Department which implemented the notorious policy of urban race segregation known as the Durban System. The museum depicts the history of c20th Durban, foregrounding the contribution made to the city by the majority people who were rendered powerless by the city authorities.
