P.J. Fielding and L.E. Beckley of the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) drafted this report. Help and advice from other scientists at ORI are gratefully acknowledged. The report was then edited for Internet publication by R Peart and V Ramasar of the CSIR. Data on recreational fishing along the coast were extracted from the ORI invertebrate harvesting data base and the National Marine Linefish System (NMLS), a data base maintained by the Chief Directorate: Marine and Coastal Management (formerly Sea Fisheries). Data are obtained by shore patrols and inspections by KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service (KZNNCS) staff, as well as from voluntary catch card and licence returns. These data are not specific to the Durban Metropolitan area and cover harvesting along the whole coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Information on pollution was obtained from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Other information was obtained from the following sources:
