Endemism – Restricted to a certain region or part of a region. In this case, found only in the waters around South Africa.

Pelagic – Living in the ocean at mid or surface levels in the water column.

Sciaenidae – Pertaining to the family of fishes known as Sciaenidae which includes the kob and geelbek species.

Serranidae – Pertaining to the family of fishes known as Serranidae which includes various species of rock cods.

Sparidae - Pertaining to the family of fishes known as Sparidae which includes slinger, musselcrackers, seventy four, scotsman, stumpnose and karanteen.

Subtidal – Permanently submerged. Not exposed to the air at low tides.

COD – Chemical oxygen demand

OA – Oxygen absorbed

pH – A measure of the acidity of a solution

TDS – Total dissolved solids
