ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AT THE NATIONAL BOTANICAL INSTITUTE

INTRODUCTION

The mission of the National Botanical Institute (NBI)'s Environmental Education Programme is to use the eight National Botanical Gardens (NBG) and Resources to inspire and enable people to take responsibility for their environment.Three existing programmes are run at Kirstenbosch, Witwatersrand and Pretoria (NBI, 2000).

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMMES

  • improvement of access for pupils, students and teachers to the gardens;
  • facilitating access to the resources and expertise housed at the NBI to increase the educational value of a visit to the NBG;
  • contributing to educational reconstruction and development through quality environmental and botanical education programmes;
  • development of effective environmental and botanical education networks;
  • encouragement and support of community-based environmental action linked to indigenous plants; and
  • continuous evaluation of programmes to ensure dynamic development and improvement.
