Industrial
Production
As of the end of
1997 Prague had a total of 652 business units monitored by the Czech
Bureau of Statistics, i.e. with more than twenty employees. Their
aggregate industrial production value was CZK 204,037.7 million - a
5.7 % increase over 1996.
All industries
generated higher revenues in 1997 than in 1996 except for the
textile and ready-made clothing industry (-6.3 %), and
leather-working industry (-2 %). Their well-to-do counterparts
included tobacco processing (+52.6 %), pulp and paper production
(+71.9 %), production of glassware and ceramic ware (+25.9 %), and
production of other means of transport (+33,1 %).
The number of people
employed by industrial enterprises in Prague was 120,334, i.e. 4.3 %
less than in 1996. In 1997 the number of employees dropped by 5,398
which means that the declining trend continued also in 1997.
Building
Industries
The total value of
the building work accomplished by 257 contractors in 1997 was CZK
55,381 million, i.e. 4.4 % higher than in 1996. The value of
domestic building contracts rose by 4.3 %, while that of contracts
performed abroad by 123.7 %. The value of new construction projects,
redevelopments and modernizations was 5.7 % higher than in 1996, and
its share in the overall volume of building work was highest as well
(in excess of 90 %). Like in other industries there has been a
workforce reduction in construction companies as well.
