What is the SECTOR
in the City like
?
The total number of
motor vehicles registered in the territory of Prague keeps
increasing. Between 1990 and 1997, the average year-on-year increase
was 38,000 cars, although the growth rate slowed down to just 13,000
in 1997. By 1997, there was one passenger car per two inhabitants in
Prague.
The total
number of registered motor vehicles rose from 702,966 in 1996 to
721,962 in 1997. The increase represents 18,996 motor vehicles, i.e.
2.7 %. Similarly, the number of passenger cars rose from 588,968 to
602,246, i.e. by 13,278 units (2.3 %).

Compared
to the 1980s, the traffic intensity increase rate since 1990 is
almost six times higher. Over the last seven years (1990 - 1997),
the daily traffic intensity has increased by 7.6 million vehicular
kilometers per day. In relative terms, the traffic intensity
increase rate in Prague since 1990 is almost three times higher than
in other parts of the country. Between 1991 and 1997, the traffic
intensity has increased by 104 %, especially in the central zone of
the City (occasionally by as much as over 100 %). The relatively
lower peak-time traffic intensity increase in the centre of Prague
is attributable to increasingly frequent and extensive traffic jams
(bumper-to-bumper queues of waiting vehicles) as crucial crossroads
have reached their permeability limit.

The
high increase of passenger car traffic in Prague over the last few
years has been caused by a number of factors the most important of
which are: a switch of some commuters from the public transport
system to using their own cars; increased mobility of population;
and an increased number of motorized visitors of Prague. Between
1990 and 1997, the number of people using the public transport
system in Prague has dropped by almost 793,000 per day, i.e. by 19
%.
The public transport system of Prague
transported a total of 1,078,054 thousand passengers in 1997, i.e.
2,064 thousand (0.2 %) little than in 1996. Only the number of
passengers transported by the metro showed an increase (883 thousand
passengers, i.e. +0.2 %). On the other hand, trams and buses showed
decreases of 1,872 thousand (+0.5 %) and
1,075 thousand (0.3 %), respectively. The shares of the different
means of public transport in the above total figure were as follows:
metro - 407,010 thousand (37.8 %); trams - 339,460 thousand (31.6
%); buses - 239,584 thousand (30.6 %).
On the other hand,
the increasing trend in individual transport continued throughout
1997 reflected in a high number (39,479) of accidents in the
territory of Prague, i.e. 1,388 (3.6 %) more than in 1996 in which
90 people lost their lives (i.e. 5 people/5.9 % more than in 1996),
and 539 (115 less than in 1996) were seriously injured which
translates into a decrease of 17.6 %.
