What is the general situation with the housing?

Housing construction is one of the sectors of building industries which the economic reform has hit hardest. Recently, construction companies have been interested in non-housing, renovation and refurbishment projects rather than housing. In 1997 1,833 apartment units were completed - an increase of just 111 flats (6.4 %) compared to 1996. Of the above number family houses accounted for 581 units (34.8 %), apartment blocks for 753 units (41.1 %), and annexes or attic flats for 441 units (24.1 %).
By comparing housing construction time curves since 1921 the highest number of completed apartments date back to the 1971 - 1980, the time of so-called comprehensive housing construction projects. The declining trend which began in the 1980s has continued even after 1990. However, as many as 5,742 units were started in 1997. The question is whether this really means an end of the declining housing construction trend of the past years.

Quite a few people have their family houses built outside but in close proximity of Prague; this phenomenon is in line with the trend that could be witnessed in western Europe during the last few decades. The current bleak housing situation also results in a declining number of people moving to Prague from other regions of the Czech Republic.
