The
Biological Pond in Vinor has become notorious, and not just in our
country. Although its area was less than two hectares, analyses
showed that its bottom sediments contain 9 tons of cadmium, 21 tons
of chromium, 15 tons of copper, 73 tons of zinc, 4 tons of nickel,
and 1.5 tons of lead. Cadmium concentrations in excess of 2,000 ppm
were quite common in the surface layer. (The Gazette of the Ministry
of the Environment of the Czech Republic of November 15, 1992
recommends soils containing more than 30 ppm of cadmium for Class C
sanitization in the so-called industrial zone. The common natural
background value is 0.2 ppm.) This particular site was therefore
regarded as one of the most cadmium-contaminated places in the whole
world.
