What is the general situation with
waste?
Waste production and
disposal rank among top-priority environmental issues in Prague,
along with traffic
. One of much-discussed topics is putting the
Municipal Waste Incineration Plant in Malešice into full operation
(since October 1998). Other waste-disposal facilities in the
territory of Prague include a major waste-dumping site in Dáblice,
regional waste-dumping sites in the vicinity of Prague, and a number
of small-size incinerators.
What is causing the problems ? Overall production of solid waste in the
territory of Prague in 1996 was approximately 605,000 tons, with
municipal and industrial waste accounting for 62 % and 29 % of the
above figure, respectively. Of the total amount, 544,000 tons fall
into the “special waste” category (including hazardous
waste). ...
What are the impacts of waste? Mapping has identified
approximately 550 landfills and historical pollution and/or waste
dumping sites along both banks of the Vltava River and the northern
part of Prague. Read about one of the most
cadmium-contaminated places in the world
What is being done to fix the problems
? Although there is not yet a high enough economic pressure
that would make recycling a more attractive option than dumping or
incineration, methods of separating different types of waste
(colourless glass, coloured glass, paper) are being looked for and
implemented. Since July 1997, a new
municipal waste collection system has been in place. The city is devoting a great deal of desired
attention to historical environmental burdens. ...
