  • In terms of temperature, the year 1997 was normal in Prague (the Ruzynì station reports a 0.2 °C variation from the 1961 - 1990 average level). Only the months of January, April, and October were below the average level, while March, August, and December were warmer than usual. Temperatures in the other months ranged around the long-term average. The highest temperature of 33.2 °C and the highest average daily temperature of 27.3 °C were recorded at Klementinum on June 29, 1997. The lowest temperature of -16.2 °C and the lowest average daily temperature of -12.5 °C were recorded in Ruzynì on January 1, 1997. The total rainfall of 486.5 mm observed at Ruzynì represents 92 % of the normal value. The month of July 1997 which brought devastating floods in Moravia and East Bohemia was extraordinarily rainy in Prague as well (194 % of the normal rainfall). The highest daily maximum of 34.7 mm was recorded during a rainstorm and subsequent showers on July 23, 1997 in Smíchov fifty-six days with a snow cover and the maximum snow cover height of 20 cm on January 6 and 7, 1997 in Ruzynì are both within normal limits. The total yearly sunshine was above the average, the highest upward variations having been recorded in February, August, and September. As a whole, the year showed a lower-than-usual amount of wind. The maximum instantaneous speed of 31 m.s-1 was recorded by the Karlov station on April 11, 1997.

A detailed account of selected weather variables as measured at Praha - Ruzynì, including their comparison with the 1961 - 1990 average, is shown below. To make the charts easier to find one’s way in, a method of ten-day moving averages was employed in most cases.

The month of January 1997 was unusual from the viewpoint of a long-term incidence of inversions and a non-typical snow cover distribution. Unfavorable dispersion conditions also occurred in autumn months, from October 17 till October 20, in the second half of the second decade of November (November 16 to 20), and in the beginning of the second half of December.
