Transport

How does the transport influence Tbilisi environment

Increase of population and motor vehicle

About 1.3 mln people live in Tbilisi. Because of the lack of workplaces in the city the everyday flow of the population is high, especially the part which owns motor cars. Transport sector is one of the main industries in Tbilisi, creating workplaces in non-governmental sector. Minibus and private taxi service of passengers is of particular importance, because of low prices (demands). As a result of this

  • use of such important source of transport as metro has reduced
  • air pollution has increased significantly

Social-economic aspects of these issues are factually uninvestigated, which would have been the base for the improvement of situation for decision-making balanced with account of human health and environmental aspects.

negative effects of noise - the problem, which has not been yet comprehended by the main part of the population is of especial significance because of engagement in other priority problems (workplaces, power supply, protection of human rights, etc.).

Pollution of urban environment from transport may impose negative influence on human health. The existing system of atmospheric monitoring (fine fractions of particulate matter are not messured, benzapirene, volatile organic compounds, ozone are not accounted any more) is not oriented towards the protection of human health and does not meet the requirements necessary for the settlement of existing problems. Factually, there are no investigations related to these issues, no assessments, and, correspondingly, relevant actions, or strategies, for the solution of the problems have not been identified.
