Air quality

What you can do to help your city

There are several recommendations to the city municipality that may improve air quality in Tbilisi:

  • Reduce impact from the motor vehicle by limiting export of leaded gasoline,
  • Increase level of vehicle control system; introduce international standards for yearly vehicle technical inspection,
  • Introduce modern traffic regulation system,
  • Repair and improve network of main and secondary streets,
  • Develop public transport management system; increase share of electric transport means (trolley buses, metro, and tram) in a public transportation,
  • Control emissions from the thermal power (Tbilisi Electric Central) and heating (unregistered private or commercial boilers) sector; change sulphur-rich black oil (mazoot) by less polluting oil or gas,
  • Control emissions from Lilo oil refinery and various small constructed materials' plants and shops (mostly asphalt shops)

As it is well known, green areas and parks can improve urban air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. Therefore, much more attention has to be paid to managing green areas within the city centre.
