Tbilisi
landfills
Factually existing illegal
landfills are not registered, which originated in the city and
city's suburbs. Some examples are: the territory adjacent to Lisi
lake; Lochini, Varketili-2 settlements; from Nutsubidze-2 to
Vashlidjvari settlements; Chichinadze streets territories;
territories of Samgori channel, Elia (next to Repair point), Mziuri
childtown, Amiredjibi street (settlement of subway construction
service), Avtchala ravine (next to the glass factory), Tsaishi
street (next to Kukia St.) and many others.
From "officially" existing four landfills:
Gldani
landfill has been in operation since 1973,
allocated territory, 26 hectares; it holds approximately 3 ha, the
fence is damaged. Polygon is overfilled at present, it endangers the
adjacent agricultural lands; the depth of the wastes is 8 m, height
20 m, is active (in 1972-92 years there are approximately 17 250 000
m3 of wastes disposed);
Lilo landfill
has been in operation since 1989, initially 2
hectares have been allocated, it occupies 5 hectares, its fence is
damaged, water drainage system is not adjusted, industrial wastes
are dumped on bigger area over several dozens of hectares, the depth
of waste disposal is 7 m, the height is 14 m (in 1989-95 years about
2 700 000 m3 of wastes have been disposed), is active;
Iaghludji
landfill is located on 254 km of
Novorossijsk-Baku-Erevan highway, Marneuli region. Under operation
since 1985, 3 ha of land space have been allocated (by the decree of
the Cabinet of Minister of 1985), at present it occupies more
than 5 hectares. From the beginning the infiltration collector at
the ravine has remained unconstructed, the space rent for the
purposes of animal farming is located near polygon. In 1985-95 about
4 000 000 m3 of wastes have been disposed, they are 8 m in depth and
8 m in height.
Mukhatgverdi
landfill has been under operation since 1989,
it has been allocated in 1985 1 ha area at the former carrier of
inert materials, is not fenced. In 1989-95 about 2 700 000 kbm of
wastes have been disposed, the depth is 6 m, is active.
Apart from landfills there
exist couple of facilities that aimed to contribute to the waste management activities in the city:
Gldani Composting Facility
with a capacity
of 300 000 m3, has not worked from the beginning because of poor
quality of composting;
Garbage Incineration Facility
(in Ponitchala, near to Tbilisi),
has been constructed in 1968, recycling capacity of 200 000 m3, is
not under operation;
Neither of
those landfills meets even minimum requirements for health and environmental
protection. All of them are overfilled. Their
legal status is uncertain. In fact it's almost impossible to understand
the content and designation of normative documentation of Tbilisi
municipality connected with waste management.
