Water quality

What is the general situation with the water quality?

Surface water quality.
Observation on the quality of the surface water sites is conducted by the national center of environmental monitoring of Hydrometdepartment. There are three observation points within the city limits on Mtkvari river and two ones on Vere river. According to the data of 1998 the quality of Mtkvari River in Tbilisi section exceeds the marginally permissible concentrations by phenols, oil products and nitrogen compounds. Biological and chemical demand on the oxygen (BOD5 and COD5) was high on Vere River, respectively, 4.48 mg/l and 13.4 mg/l at Mtkvari mouth. Apart from that the content of phenols (0.012 mg/l) and ammonium and nitrite nitrogen (respectively, 1.62 and 0.85 mg/l) was high over here.

Drinking water quality.
Constant biological and epidemiological monitoring on the quality of drinking water factually does not occur in Tbilisi. Taking of water samples is irregular and is more of event-response-type, i.e. when there is the situation of epidemiological urgency. The system of drinking water (as well as that of sewage) is extremely obsolete and, thus, the losses of water as a result of leakage constitute almost 30%. Because of unstable supply with electric energy, the pumping stations are frequently disturbed, which frequently results in irregular supply of population with water.
